What a watermark is for

A watermark is text or an image placed across the pages of a document. Common uses are marking a draft, labelling a copy as confidential, stopping a sample from being passed off as final, and adding a company logo to handouts.

Step by step

  • Open the Add watermark tool and add your PDF.
  • Choose Text or Logo image.
  • For text, set the wording, colour, size and whether it runs diagonally or horizontally.
  • Pick one of nine positions and adjust transparency while you watch the live preview of each page.
  • Generate, preview and download.

Making it readable but unobtrusive

The best watermark is clearly visible but doesn't stop people reading the page. A low-opacity diagonal word across the centre works well. For a logo, keep it small and in a corner, or very faint across the middle.

Limits

A watermark is added into the page content, so it's hard to remove casually, but it isn't unbreakable security. For real access control, add a password as well.
