How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Number every page of a PDF — choose the position, format and starting number, and see exactly where it will land first.

Why page numbers matter

Page numbers make long documents usable. They let people refer to “page 14” in a meeting, check that no page is missing from a printout, and make a table of contents meaningful.

Step by step

  • Open the Add page numbers tool and add your PDF.
  • Pick a position — bottom centre is the classic choice — and a format such as 1, 2, 3, “1 of N” or “Page 1”.
  • Set the starting number and font size and check the live preview.
  • Generate and download.

Continuing from another document

If this PDF is part two of a longer document, set “Start at” to the next number so the numbering continues rather than restarting at 1.

Putting it together in the right order

If you're combining several PDFs, merge them first and number once at the end, so the sequence is continuous across the whole document.
