Why you can't search a scan
When you scan paper, you get a picture of each page. Your computer sees pixels, not words, so Ctrl+F finds nothing and you can't copy any text. OCR — optical character recognition — reads the words in the picture and stores them as real text.
What you get
The tool adds the recognised text as an invisible layer under the original page image. The pages look exactly like your scan, but you can now search and select the words.
How to do it
- Open the Make PDF searchable tool and add your scanned PDF.
- Choose the language the document is written in.
- Start recognition and wait — it works through each page.
- Download the searchable PDF.
Getting better results
- Scan at a decent resolution (around 300 DPI for normal text).
- Keep pages straight and well lit; skewed or blurry pages cause mistakes.
- Choose the correct language — it makes a real difference.
Why it takes a while
Recognition is heavy work. Because Play PDF does it on your own device rather than a remote server, large documents take longer — but your scans stay private.
