When you need to merge PDFs

Merging PDFs means joining two or more separate PDF files into one document. It comes up constantly: a job application that wants your CV, cover letter and certificates as a single file; an expense claim where every receipt arrived as its own PDF; a report assembled from chapters written by different people.

A single file is easier to email, easier to upload to a portal that only accepts one attachment, and easier for the person on the other end to read in order.

How to merge PDFs in your browser

You don't need to install anything. The steps below work on a laptop, phone or tablet:

  • Open the Merge PDF tool and add every file you want to combine.
  • Check the thumbnails and use the ↑ and ↓ buttons to put the files in the order they should appear.
  • Remove anything you added by accident.
  • Click Preview merge, flip through the result, and download it.

Get the order right before you merge

The most common mistake is merging first and noticing the wrong order afterwards. Always look through the preview before downloading. If a single page ended up in the wrong place, you can fix it afterwards with the Organize pages tool, which lets you move pages around visually.

File names often don't sort the way you expect — “Invoice 10” can come before “Invoice 2” — so don't rely on the order your computer lists them in.

What about password-protected PDFs?

A PDF that needs a password to open can't be merged until it's unlocked. In Play PDF a locked file shows a padlock on its thumbnail; type the password on that card and click Unlock and it joins the queue like any other file. PDFs that only restrict printing or copying, without needing a password to open, merge without any extra step.

Will merging make the file huge?

The combined PDF is roughly the sum of its parts. If the result is too large to email, run it through a PDF compressor afterwards — see our guide to shrinking a PDF below a size limit.

Is it safe to merge confidential documents online?

It depends on the tool. Many “free” sites upload your files to their servers. Play PDF works differently: the merging happens inside your own browser, so the documents never leave your device. That matters for contracts, ID copies and financial statements.

Ready to try it?

Merge PDF is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser — your files aren't uploaded.
