How to Split a PDF Into Separate Pages or Extract Specific Pages

Pull out a page range, save every page as its own file, or split a long document by chapter — and how to describe page ranges correctly.

Why split a PDF

You might only need to send page 4 of a contract, break a scanned batch into individual documents, or pull one chapter from a long manual. Splitting avoids sharing more than you intended and keeps files small.

Three ways to split

  • Extract pages: keep only the pages you list, for example 1-3, 7, 10-12.
  • Split every page: get a zip with one PDF per page.
  • Split by bookmark: if the PDF has bookmarks or chapters, get one file per section.

Writing page ranges

Use commas to separate pages and a hyphen for a run: “2-5, 9, 12-14” means pages 2 to 5, page 9, and pages 12 to 14. Page numbers refer to the position in the file, not any printed number on the page — so a document with a cover page may need a one-page offset.

After you split

Many splits end with renaming. If you produced a pile of files with unhelpful names, the Batch rename tool can suggest names from each file's title and date.
